Creature Carpet was originally commissioned as a large scale floor installation to be laid in Hinckley High Street.

The procession begins it's steady march through Hinkley town centre. A long line moving that cuts across the streets, their shoulders burdened by the heavy rolls of carpet. Side stepping to line against the shop windows each majestically unravels their roll...setting the stage and making the picture. The picture stops the traffic, the audience stop shopping.

A piece of the surrounding countryside lays at their feet. Long grass sways in the wind, ladybirds and bumble bees sit in the wild flowers. Dragon flies hover above the muddy pools. The idyllic scene beckons the audience, jump in, walk over, run and skip. However under their feet, beneath the surface and through the grass, where the earth starts to fall in and the rocks start to crack, others are watching. They look up, curious watching what has grown from their compost, their planting. The audience make way for the circus, their performances reflect elements of those beneath the surface. The viewer experiences the impact of the actual performance alongside the insecurities we hold in all our public performances.

The piece aims to celebrate the history and people of Hinkley throwing them both into the centre of a contemporary stage. To assign a piece of the countryside to a busy shopping street honors the large proportion of Hinkley's visitors that come from the local rural villages. The work allows us all to take the stage, to become part of a piece of contemporary art....we need no skills, our curiosity completes the image.
