Visions of Hartlepool - Hartlepool Police Station. [< back to Public Art >]
In 2008 artist Emily Campbell was commissioned by Cleveland Police Authority to create a series of artworks for the entrance to Hartlepool Police Station and for the glass doors leading to the front desk. The following images were produced after a series of site visits to Hartlepool. Hartlepool seems to be re-inventing itself - rising from industrial decline to a modern and vibrant town.
The work is produced after a period of research, which involves both conversations with local people and taking digital photographs of the familiar sights in and around the town. The work aims to create windows through the brick wall, to create a new space, a magical space, a space where anything could happen.
The work looks at ideas of growth and reinvention. Both sets of images become about looking, about what we would normally expect to see – creating something extraordinary out of the everyday.
